Phonics Codes for English II Phonograms

DVD (Y03IID)

Orton Phonograms

The 72 Orton Phonograms are the primary phonics codes for precise English speech, spelling and reading (decoding ) English. The English alphabet has 26 letters that say 45 sounds. Each of the letters say one or more sounds. The letters also form "teams", these are called "multi-letters" that say one or more sounds. Both the single letters and the multi-letters are called "phonograms". The phonogram's name is its sound sequence. The definition of a phonogram is: A letter or a set combination of letters that represents one or more single 'voiced' sounds in a given word. The phonograms consist of the 26 alphabet letters and 46 combinations of letters with 2-4 letters, each has 1-6 single sounds.

Sound Sequences and Decoding (Reading)

Some phonograms have the same sound in every word in which they appear. Others have several sounds, and deciding which sound to use is one of the skills needed for decoding (reading) English. The sounds of the phonograms are in the order of their frequency of use. For instance, the sound sequence  for the  phonogram "a" is 1./a/(have) - 2./a/ (letter name) - 3./ah/ (ball). It says its first sound about 70 percent of the time, so it is listed first, It says is second sound almost 25 percent of the time, so that sound is listed second. It says its third sound less often, so that sound is listed last. When the students try the first sound in a word they will most often be right. If the first sound doesn't work, then they should try the second sound, and the third sound last. For this reason it is important to learn the sounds in the order of their use frequency.

Phonics First & Fast

Phonetic instruction should be first and fast. Memory research has verified the efficiency of learning all of the sounds of the phonogram at one time, rather than in layers. When the phonogram's sounds are introduced together, the brain can store the information in one place for easy retrieval.

This method starts with a rapid presentation of the codes of the language. The learner needs to see phonics in operation. Learn the phonograms quickly. The first 56 within the first 5 weeks, and all 72 within 11 weeks. Present 4-6 phonograms daily (or more for older and remedial students), review all previously learned phonograms each session.

The DVD/Video may be used to learn the phonograms and for review or drill. The phonogram's sound sequence should be rehearsed until the phonogram stands out as a sound in a given word. Only with repetition over a period of time will these concepts be retained.

The phonogram's illustration & keyword caption is an easily learned memory device. The key words in the caption depict the phonogram's sounds in the order of use frequency. This knowledge is vital for fast and accurate decoding (reading) of English. The 1st sound of the phonogram is the most often used. The 2nd sound is less often used. The 3rd through 6th sounds diminish in use frequency.

Give "Phonemic Awareness"

Teach Phonemic Awareness with the phonograms that say the 45 individual sounds (phonemes)  heard in English speech. Phonemic awareness is the knowledge that spoken words are made up of these tiny segments of sounds; literally “sound” awareness, and is the understanding that words are made up of sounds and being able to hear, recognize, break apart and manipulate the individual sounds that make up syllables and words (explicit phonics).

Phonics Codes for English II Phonograms

DVD (Y03IID)

This lively version of the DVD of the 72 Orton Phonograms is fast-paced for right-brain learners of English from birth to age 5 or 6. These show only the letters of the phonograms on the face of a flashcard. Right-brain learners are quick to learn and will not tolerate a slow learning pace. The phonograms are shown through 3-times for a total time of 21 minutes. The phonograms are separated in sections of 10 for control.

Infants and preschool children may accelerate precise speech, receive phonemic awareness and learn the phonograms’ sound sequences and dialogues simply by playing the DVD in their ‘space’ without instruction. The sound may be used for an infant in the same manner as  a music or language tape. The infant does not need to see and hear the phonogram letters at the same time; their brain will categorize and file this information and will associate it when they see the phonograms. Use for: Infants, Babies, Toddlers, Pre-school, Kindergarten &  English as a Second Language (ESL).
